Activating your Eurail Pass is a simple process—but it’s an essential first step before you can start traveling. What Is a Eurail Pass? 

A Eurail Pass is a flexible, all-in-one train ticket that allows non-European residents to travel across 33 European countries using almost all national and regional trains. It’s available in a variety of formats, such as: 

 

• Global Pass – Travel across multiple countries

• One Country Pass – Explore a single country in depth 

 

You can choose between: 

 

• Flexible Passes – A certain number of travel days within a set period (e.g., 7 days in 1 month) 

• Continuous Passes – Unlimited travel every day for a set period (e.g., 15 consecutive days)

Why Do You Need to Activate Your Pass? 

Activating your Eurail Pass turns it into a valid travel document and ticket. Without activation, you can’t board trains using the pass. 

 

Your pass must be activated before your first travel day, and it can only be done through the Eurail mobile app. In any case we will make sure to help you set it up during our Pre-Travel call and clear all your questions. 

 

When Should I Activate My Eurail Pass? 

You can activate the Eurail Pass for a future date so you can set it up anytime in advance, but we recommend activating your pass a day or two before your first train journey. That gives you enough time to get everything set up. Once your pass is activated, the clock starts ticking! 

 

⚠️ Note: Once activated, some passes can’t be deactivated, especially if your travel period has started. Be sure to double check with the Rail Escape team before you activate it if you have any doubts. 

 

How To Activate Your Eurail Pass (Step-by-Step) 

Your Eurail Pass is now fully digital, so activation happens directly in the Eurail Rail Planner app.  

 

Step 1: Download and Add Your Pass 

First things first – download the Rail Planner app on your smartphone (Google Play or Apple Store). This free app is your command center for managing your Eurail Pass and planning journeys across Europe. 

 

Once you have the app installed: 

 

1. Open the Rail Planner app and navigate to “My Pass”

 

 

1. Tap “Add your Pass” to begin the setup process 

 

 

2. Enter your details carefully: You’ll need your last name and Pass number exactly as they appear in the documentation that we shared with you – these fields are case-sensitive, so double-check for accuracy 

 

 

Pro Tip for Group Travelers: You can add multiple Passes to a single device, making it easy to manage travel for your entire group. However, remember that everyone with Passes on the same device must travel together on all journeys. 

 

Traveling with Children: Child Passes need their own activation and should ideally be on a separate device. Each Child Pass requires its own trip and tickets for train inspections. Children under 4 travel for free without needing their own Pass. 

 

Step 2: Connect a Trip 

Your Pass needs a trip to track your journeys effectively. Think of this as creating a travel itinerary within the app. 

 

• Create a new trip with a memorable name (like “European Adventure 2025”) 

• Or select an existing trip if you’ve already created one 

 

 

Tip: If you’re managing multiple Passes, each one needs its own dedicated trip. You can duplicate existing trips to save time when setting up multiple Passes for group travel. 

 

Step 3: Activate Your Pass 

This is the crucial step that makes your Pass valid for travel. You’ll need: 

 

• Your passport or ID (the same document you’ll be traveling with) 

• Your first travel date  

 

During activation: 

 

1. Enter your passport/ID number exactly as it appears on your travel document

1. Search for the route we selected for you in the digital itinerary
2. Using the Eurail app “planner” feature, look for the route we selected for you 
3. Review journey details by tapping on any result 
4. Once you find it, add it to your journey

Adding Journeys to Your Pass 

 

Once you’ve found your ideal journey: 

 

1. Save the journey to your trip from the search results 
2. Add the journey to your Pass when you’re ready to travel 

For Flexi Pass holders: The app will ask if you want to use one of your travel days for this journey

 

 

Showing Your Ticket 

 

When it’s time to board or during ticket inspections: 

 

1. Go to “My Pass” in the app 
2. Tap “Show ticket” to display your digital ticket
